Downey to the NBA?

Gamecocks star basketballer Devan Downey has announced he'll submit his name for consideration in the 2009 NBA draft – but the junior point guard will not hire an agent, indicating that Downey might not have played his last game at South Carolina.

Downey will participate in predraft workouts and, in all likelihood, be told by scouts that he's not quite lottery-pick material at this time in his career. No surprise there – though he averaged 19.8 points per game this year, the 5'9" Downey is at a decided disadvantage when it comes to NBA readiness. Another season of conditioning, and lighting up the SEC, would only cause Downey's stock to rise. By not hiring an agent, the door for a return next year remains wide open.

Official USC announcement.
